How are prayer times calculated?

Five prayers punctuate the day: Fajr (dawn), Dhuhr (solar noon), Asr (afternoon), Maghrib (sunset) and Isha (night). Their times are derived from the position of the sun at your coordinates. Dhuhr, Asr and Maghrib follow directly from the sun’s course; Fajr and Isha depend on an angle of the sun below the horizon (twilight), whose value changes from one calculation convention to another — hence slightly different times depending on the method.

Which method should I choose?

The simplest approach is to use the method your mosque follows. In France the France (12°) convention is the most common (a 15° variant also exists); the Muslim World League (18°/17°) is widely used too. The Asr time depends on the school (madhab): the Hanafi school sets it later than the others. All these settings are available above, and in the app where they come with reminders.

Frequently asked questions

How are prayer times calculated?

From the position of the sun for your coordinates. Fajr and Isha rely on an angle of the sun below the horizon that varies by method; Dhuhr, Asr and Maghrib follow directly from the sun’s course.

Which calculation method should I choose in France?

The France (12°) convention is the most common in France; a 15° variant also exists. Prefer the one used by your mosque for times consistent with your community.

Why does the Asr time change depending on the school?

Asr depends on the shadow length: the Hanafi school sets it when the shadow reaches twice the object’s height, the other schools at once. The time therefore differs by madhab.
