How is zakat calculated?

Zakat on wealth (zakat al-mal) is 2.5% of the net wealth held above a threshold called the nisab, for a full lunar year (the "hawl"). Wealth taken into account includes cash, gold, silver and other zakatable assets (stocks, business shares…), from which short-term debts are deducted. Below the nisab, no zakat is due on this wealth.

What is the nisab?

The nisab corresponds to the value of 85g of gold or 595g of silver — two traditional references. Since the silver nisab is generally much lower than the gold one, it makes zakat obligatory at a lower wealth threshold: several contemporary scholars recommend this reference as a precaution, so as not to underestimate what is due.

What this calculator doesn't cover

This calculator only covers standard zakat al-mal (cash, gold, silver, other assets). It doesn't cover Zakat al-Fitr (due before Eid al-Fitr, at a flat amount per person), nor zakat on livestock or crops, which follow different calculation rules. For a complex financial situation (business assets, mixed debts…), consult someone qualified.

Frequently asked questions

What is the nisab?

The wealth threshold above which zakat becomes obligatory — the value of 85g of gold or 595g of silver.

Do you need to hold this wealth for a year before owing zakat?

Yes, in principle: zakat is due on wealth that has stayed above the nisab for a full lunar year (the hawl). This calculator gives the amount due at a given moment, but doesn't track that duration for you.

Does this calculator cover Zakat al-Fitr, livestock or crops?

No, it only covers zakat on wealth (zakat al-mal). Zakat al-Fitr, livestock and crops follow different calculation rules.
